  • The 68RFE is a heavy-duty automatic transmission used in Ram / Dodge 2500 / 3500 diesel trucks from ~2007.5 through 2024. 

    Let’s break down what 68RFE stand for. 

    6: 6 Forward Gears

    8: 800 ft lbs of torque

    R: Rear Wheel Drive

    F: Fully

     This transmission is designed for high torque from diesel engines, but stock units often require upgrades for higher horsepower or towing. RedLine Transmissions

  • RedLine Transmissions offers various builds rated for different horsepower levels and/or how heavy you tow with the truck:

    • Road Boss 450 – for daily driving or light towing (under ~12,000 lbs). This transmission build can handle up to 450 horsepower.  Includes billet upgrades, improved clutch packs, hardened or new components. RedLine Transmissions

    • Tow Boss 550 – for moderate towing, daily driving with larger tires (up to ~35”), or more demanding usage. Made for those truck with 550 horsepower or less. More robust clutch packs, billet hard parts, upgraded valvebody, increased clutch capacity. RedLine Transmissions

    • HD Boss 700 – heavy towing, performance use. Geared toward trucks with up to 700 horsepower. Adds even more heavy duty components (billet hard parts, stronger drums, upgraded accumulators, high line pressure compatibility). RedLine Transmissions

    • Track Boss 900 – built for maximum power, with fully billet components, high capacity overdrive drum, upgraded torque converter, etc. Intended for competition or extreme builds. This build can handle up to 900 horsepower.  RedLine Transmissions

  • Some of the common issues that RedLine performance upgrades address:

    • Overdrive clutch failures (stock overdrive clutch may be a weak point under higher loads or modifications). RedLine Transmissions

    • Insufficient clutch capacity in some clutch packs or drums when increased torque is applied. RedLine Transmissions

    • Stock valvebody, pumps or hydraulic systems may not hold up under higher line pressures or towing demands. RedLine Transmissions

    • Wear on bearings, seals, pistons, or other internal components especially under heavy load or high mileage. RedLine Transmissions

  • Some of the upgrade features and improvements include:

    • Billet hard parts (drums, overdrive shafts, accumulator components) for increased strength. RedLine Transmissions

    • Upgraded clutch packs (stronger clutches/steels, improved materials). RedLine Transmissions

    • Upgraded valvebody (custom built high-pressure or billet valvebody). RedLine Transmissions

    • Modified or stronger front pump to support better hydraulic pressure and durability. RedLine Transmissions

    • New bearings, seals, gaskets, pistons, speed sensors, line pressure sensors, etc. RedLine Transmissions

    • Custom torque converters with low-stall or triple-disk designs (depending on build). RedLine Transmissions

    • Precision assembly, inspection of hard parts, and rebuilding with new or upgraded components. RedLine Transmissions

    • Warranties varying by build (e.g. 12 months unlimited mileage for the Road Boss build, up to 24 months for the other builds such as the HD Boss and Track Boss). RedLine Transmissions

  • Here are some guidelines:

    • Consider your horsepower, diesel engine tuning, and modifications. If you’ve increased power significantly, choose higher rated builds.

    • Think about towing / load: heavy towing or plowing demands a more robust build (e.g. HD Boss 700 or Track Boss 900 builds). RedLine Transmissions

    • Consider tire size: large tires (35" or larger) add load and likely require regearing or a higher build stage. RedLine Transmissions

    • Consider future upgrades: if you plan to tune more power later, it may be wise to invest in a heavier duty build now. RedLine Transmissions

      Choose for Longevity: Don’t build right to the limit. Think about everything you use your truck for—not just horsepower. For example, if your truck makes 500 horsepower but you frequently tow heavy loads, stepping up to a higher-rated build will give you a buffer rather than running the transmission at its max. This helps ensure long-term durability and gives you the confidence to push your truck without worry.
